Earth Day!

We had another wonderful week of Kindergarten!  We were so surprised to see this week that we got to the 140th day of school already.  As one friend said, "Where has the time gone?"  The children also had a great time celebrating our SCS Spirit Week.  Thanks for all your assistance in helping your child be a part of spirit week.

As a part of our weather unit, we took some time to talk about and learn about Earth Day.  In our Scholastic News this week, we learned how to be Earth Day Superheroes by taking care of the earth.  We talked about not wasting water while brushing our teeth, picking up litter on the ground, recycling and reusing.  Then the children each got to make their own Earth Day Superhero cape!  On the back of their capes are badges that explain how they can help the Earth and what they can recycle!  Hope your child's cape made it home yesterday!  We had a lot of fun flying around in them outside yesterday...despite the windy weather!  Lastly we read The Earth Book and even wrote some Earth poetry.  Earth Day is during our vacation...maybe you and your child can pledge to do something kind for the earth while on your vacation!  We also finished observing and graphing the weather this week.  We had been adding a weather picture to our picto-graph for the past month.  Then we tallied the results and made some notices about the weather patterns in April.  Most of our days were sunny and cloudy and we were all happy to see that there were no snowy days!

In math, we started working on solving some frog story problems.  As we discuss these problems and solve them, we are working on showing our math thinking and not just sharing the answer.  Once I pose the problem to the children, they have to show how they solved it with numbers, pictures, and words and be able to explain their thinking.  I was very impressed with their math thinking!  Be sure to ask your child about the problems he or she solved this week!

Lastly, we finished our writing unit on opinion writing by publishing a few more of our letters.  You may see an envelope come home addressed to you....get ready to be persuaded and convinced by your child about a certain topic!  Our Kindergarten writers did such a nice job in this unit.  They could all state an opinion and provide reasons to support their opinions.  All of their writing is coming home in their Friday Folder today. I hope that after the vacation, you have a chance to read through it all with your child.  I think you will be impressed by how much they have grown as writers!  Our next unit is poetry!

Just a reminder that there is no school next week.  School will resume on April 29th.  I hope you all have a wonderful vacation!
